WORKFORCE Dental Staffing

North York, Toronto

Dental staffing in North York

Book temp dental hygienists, dental assistants and front office staff along the Yonge corridor and across the borough. Two subway lines reach you, and far fewer practices are competing for the people they carry.

Why this market is different

Reach and competition are not the same question

Most of this section treats staffing as one problem: can somebody get to your chair. Downtown Toronto complicates that, because everybody can, so what decides a claim is why they would pick you over the practice two streets away.

North York is where the two come apart in your favour. Two subway lines run through it and a professional can be here from much of the city in about half an hour, but the practices are spread over a large borough rather than stacked into a few blocks. High reach with moderate competition is the combination you actually want, and very little of Toronto has it.

The high-competition end, downtown

Reach against competition

Qualitative
How easily people reach youVery high
How many practices want themVery high

Everybody can reach you, and everybody wants them

The densest concentration of practices in the country sitting on top of the subway system. Your posting reaches an enormous pool and competes with several other practices for the same Tuesday.

Both scales are our qualitative read of a market, not measurements. We do not publish counts of practices or professionals anywhere.

For North York practices

Make the advantage visible

You have the ratio, so use it

Say how close you are to a station. Reach like downtown's with competition well below it is the strongest position in the city, and the posting is where you make it visible.

Name the neighbourhood

The borough is large enough to hold several markets. Willowdale, Don Mills and Downsview each tell a professional something the word North York does not.

Say North York, never York

York is a different borough, York Region is thirty kilometres north, and York University is here. One extra word removes a genuine ambiguity.

Credentials are ours on temp

CDHO registration for hygienists, RCDSO for locum dentists, and the NDAEB certificate plus HARP where an assistant takes radiographs. One invoice at an all-in hourly rate.

North York staffing questions

Is North York easier or harder to staff than downtown?

Easier, and for a reason worth understanding. It has close to downtown-level transit access, with two subway lines through it, so a professional can reach you from much of the city in around half an hour. What it does not have is downtown-level competition, because the practices are spread across a large borough rather than stacked into a few blocks. High reach with moderate competition is the most useful combination an office can have.

Does it matter where in North York we are?

Quite a lot, because the borough is large. A practice a short walk from a station on the Yonge line draws from most of the city. A practice in the middle of a residential area between lines draws from people who drive. Neither is a problem, and they are different postings, so name your nearest station or major intersection either way.

How should we describe our location?

North York, then the neighbourhood or nearest station. The borough name is well understood, which is more than can be said for some of Toronto's former municipalities, but it covers a lot of ground. Willowdale, Don Mills, Bathurst Manor and Downsview all tell a professional something the borough name does not.

Is North York where York University is?

Yes, which catches people out and is worth knowing when you write a posting. York University is in North York, the former City of York is a different and much smaller borough to the south, and York Region is a separate regional municipality north of Steeles. If your practice is near the campus, say North York rather than York, or you will have professionals picturing two other places.

Who employs the temp professional in my North York practice?

We do, on temp and locum bookings. For hygienists we confirm registration in good standing with the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario, and for locum dentists with the RCDSO. Dental assisting is not a regulated profession in Ontario, so there we confirm the NDAEB certificate for Level II duties and HARP certification where the role involves radiographs. On a permanent hire your practice is the employer and runs its own checks.

I live in North York. Is it worth working elsewhere in the city?

You are unusually well placed for it. Line 1 runs down both sides of the city from here, so downtown, midtown and much of the west are a straightforward trip, and going north into York Region is easy by car. Setting a radius from North York reaches more of the region for less travel than setting one from almost anywhere else in Toronto.
