The island runs about 460 kilometres on essentially one highway, so these are separate markets rather than one. Treat your nearest centre as your pool.

Victoria

The capital, the island's deepest pool, and the oldest patient base of any major market in the country.

Langford

The Westshore, built almost entirely in the last twenty years. Young families where the rest of the island is retiring.

Nanaimo

The mid-island crossroads, serving everything from Ladysmith to Parksville and both mainland sailings.

Saanich

The largest municipality on the island, wrapped around the capital, and the one where naming the district tells a professional almost nothing.

Oak Bay

The oldest patient base in a region already known for them. Long-established practices where the same names have been in the book for decades.

Esquimalt

A naval town inside the capital. Younger, denser and more transient than anywhere else in Greater Victoria, and minutes from downtown.

Sidney

The far end of the Saanich Peninsula, past the airport and the ferry terminal. Half an hour from Victoria, which changes who will take the shift.

Colwood

The older half of the Westshore. Established where Langford is new-build, and the shoreline edge of a corridor better known for construction.

Sooke

Forty-five minutes west on a road that decides everything. The one part of Greater Victoria where travel time genuinely limits the pool.

Duncan

The Cowichan Valley, an hour from Victoria on paper and behind a mountain pass in practice. Its pool faces north.

Parksville

Parksville and Qualicum Beach, where the retirement demographic of the island reaches its densest concentration.

Port Alberni

Inland, over the Hump on Highway 4, and the service centre for the entire west coast beyond it.

Courtenay

The Comox Valley: three communities, an air force base and a ski hill, working as one market of real depth.

Campbell River

The last city on the highway, and the referral point for everything north of it. Nothing tops this market up.

Between and beyond

We also staff Duncan and the Cowichan Valley, Ladysmith, Parksville and Qualicum between the two main centres, and north to Courtenay, Comox and Campbell River. The pool thins as you go north, so notice matters more and a local hire matters more again. Tell us where you are and we will be straight with you about what is realistic.

The province’s second market

After the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island is the largest concentration of people and practices in British Columbia. Greater Victoria alone accounts for close to half the island.

It is an established market with a genuine professional community, not an outpost. What it is not is an extension of the mainland one.

Can you send professionals over from Vancouver?

Realistically, no, and it is better to say so plainly. Making an eight o'clock start in Victoria from Vancouver means leaving before five, and the return trip is the same again, for one day of work. Nobody does that. Every professional covering an island practice already lives on the island, which is the single most important thing to understand about staffing here.

What does that mean for my practice?

Two things. Your pool is finite and local, so a professional who works well in your operatory is worth building a relationship with rather than treating as interchangeable. And for an ongoing gap, permanent placement is usually the sounder answer than a rota, because there is no larger market next door to top up from.

Greater Victoria and the Westshore, Nanaimo and the mid-island, and the communities between them including Duncan, Ladysmith, Parksville and Qualicum. Coverage is deepest in Greater Victoria, solid around Nanaimo, and thinner as you head north toward Courtenay and Campbell River. Who employs the professional on an island placement?

On temp and locum bookings we do. We confirm registration in good standing with the BC College of Oral Health Professionals, carry the insurance and run payroll, and you receive one invoice at an all-in hourly rate. On a permanent hire your practice is the employer and runs its own registration checks and references.

I live on the island. Is it worth signing up?

Your location is worth more here than almost anywhere in the province, because practices cannot import anyone to compete with you. Set your radius to the communities you will actually drive to and the work comes to you. If you are open to Duncan or Ladysmith as well as your own town, you will see considerably more of it.
