Public health dentistry is the one setting where the appointment is not the unit of work. It is school gyms, mobile clinics, care homes, and screening days, and it is a genuinely different way to spend a career in this profession.

A chair goes deep. A program goes wide.

Everybody lit up here got real treatment from somebody who had time for them. Nobody else in the picture was reached at all, and most of them will not be reached this year either.
Neither column is the right answer. A population needs both, which is why most public health programmes run screening and treatment as two different jobs.
Where the chair actually goes
- School programs
- Screening, sealants and fluoride, delivered in a gym or a converted classroom to children who would otherwise not be seen at all.
- Mobile and portable clinics
- The operatory arrives in cases and goes back in cases. You will set up somewhere that was not designed for dentistry and take it down again the same day.
- Long-term care homes
- On-site programs for residents who have no realistic way of getting to a practice. Slow, careful work, often bedside rather than chairside.
- Community events and outreach
- Screening days run alongside other services, frequently for people who have not seen any health professional in years.
- Remote and underserved communities
- Blocks of work rather than single days, often with travel and accommodation arranged around a program schedule rather than a weekly rota.
Three things it will ask of you

You will work without the room you are used to
No fixed chair, no familiar suction, and sometimes no plumbing. People who do this well are the ones who can make an unfamiliar space work rather than list everything wrong with it.

Prevention is the whole point of the work
If you measure a good day by what you treated, this will feel thin. If you can find satisfaction in a hundred children getting sealants who were never going to get anything, it will not.

The paperwork has a purpose and it is not optional
Programs are funded on what they can demonstrate. Recording what you did is part of the work rather than an afterthought to it, and it is the part most people underestimate.
Who public health programs ask us for
- Registered dental hygienist
- The backbone of nearly every public health program. What you may do without a dentist present differs by province and state, so it is worth confirming for the program you are joining.
- Dental assistant
- Setting up and breaking down portable operatories, supporting screening lines, and keeping records straight while a room full of children moves through.
- Sterilization support
- Reprocessing for programs running across several sites in a week, which is a logistics problem as much as a clinical one.
- Coordination and admin
- Consent forms, school liaison, scheduling across sites, and the reporting the program is funded on.
Being straight about how this works
Government and health authority positions are filled through the employer’s own hiring competitions. We do not hold those roles and we cannot put you into one. What we do is cover sessions, programs and blocks of work that health authorities and program operators send us, which is a real and regular part of how these services get staffed.
Programs also run their own clearances, immunisation requirements and police checks. Expect longer lead times than a private practice, and start the paperwork early.
