Endo assisting is not general assisting on a difficult tooth. It is a distinct skill set built around isolation, magnification, and knowing what is needed before anybody can look up to ask for it.

What working at that scale does to the job
Your hands work for somebody who cannot look up
Under a microscope the operator's eyes do not leave the eyepiece, sometimes for long stretches. Everything they need has to arrive without being described, and everything they do not need has to stay out of the way. It is closer to surgical assisting than to general practice, and almost nobody expects that going in.
Isolation is not a step, it is the whole environment
The rubber dam goes on and the case lives or dies by it. In general practice isolation is one task among twenty. In endo it is the condition everything else happens inside, and a practice notices immediately whether you treat it that way.
The day is long appointments, not many appointments
Where ortho runs a stream of short visits, endo runs a handful of long ones. If you find constant turnover exhausting and would rather be deep in one thing for two hours, this is the specialty that suits your temperament.
Nobody is having a good day, and that is the job
Patients arrive in pain and frequently frightened, often having been told for years that this is the worst thing in dentistry. Being calm and unhurried with them is not a soft skill here. It is most of what the appointment needs from you before it needs anything technical.
Who endodontic practices ask us for
- Endodontic assistant
- Isolation, file handling, irrigation, and microscope assisting. The most specific chairside skill set in general dentistry.
- Dental assistant with endo experience
- Practices that run endo a day or two a week rather than exclusively, and need somebody who has done it before.
- Sterilization support
- Endo files and small instruments are their own reprocessing problem, and busy practices staff for it.
- Front office and treatment coordination
- Referrals in from general practices, urgent fits, and explaining a fee to somebody in pain. Not a quiet desk.
Endodontists are placed through our permanent side rather than as temp cover.
