WORKFORCE Dental Staffing

Thompson Okanagan

Dental staffing across the Thompson Okanagan

Temp shifts, permanent placement and dentist locum cover from Kamloops down through Kelowna to Penticton. The interior’s largest market, and the one where the month matters as much as the map.

What actually drives coverage here

The interior runs on a calendar

On the coast the question is who can physically get to you. Here it is what month it is. Summer fills the appointment book with visitors and seasonal residents at precisely the moment your own hygienist wants two weeks off, and September brings the families and students who put everything off until the kids were back at school.

The gap between those two lines is the entire staffing problem in this region, and the practices that handle it well are the ones booking August cover in April.

Spring break pulls families and staff away at the same time.

Illustrative. Both lines show the shape of the year, not measured figures. We do not publish demand or availability data for any market.

For interior practices

Planning a year, not a week

Book summer cover in the spring

August is the widest gap of the year between what your book needs and what your team can give it. Asking in July is asking late.

The coast is not a backup

Four hours from Vancouver means nobody is driving up for a day. Interior practices are staffed by interior professionals, so plan on that.

Your centre is your market

Kelowna and Kamloops are nearly two hours apart and do not share a pool. Post to the one you are actually in.

Compliance is ours on temp

Registration confirmed, insurance carried and payroll run on temp and locum bookings. One invoice at an all-in hourly rate.

Cities we staff in the Thompson Okanagan

Kelowna and Kamloops are nearly two hours apart and do not share a pool. Whichever is nearer to you is your market.

The smaller interior centres

We also staff Lake Country and Peachland in the Central Okanagan, Summerland and Osoyoos in the south, Salmon Arm in the north and Merritt on the Coquihalla. These are thinner markets where notice matters more and a local hire matters more again. Tell us where you are and we will be straight with you about what is realistic.

In context

The province’s third market

After the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island, the Thompson Okanagan is the largest concentration of people and practices in British Columbia. Kelowna in particular has been among the fastest growing cities in the country.

It is also a genuinely established market rather than an outpost, with two universities and a regional hospital system. What it is not is within reach of the coast.

Depth labels are qualitative descriptions of where our pool is concentrated. They are not counts.

For interior professionals

Summer is when you are worth most

Summer is your leverage

July and August are when interior practices most need people. Being available then puts you in the strongest position of the year.

Far less competition than the coast

Nobody is driving up from Vancouver to take your shifts. The professionals who live here are the ones who get asked.

Two real centres to choose between

Kelowna and Kamloops each have enough activity to build a week from, and Vernon sits within reach of Kelowna.

One tax form, however many practices

Every shift runs through WORKFORCE, so a year across several interior offices lands on a single T4.

Thompson Okanagan staffing questions

What makes staffing in the interior different from the coast?

The calendar. On the coast the question is who can physically reach you. Here it is what month it is. Summer brings visitors and a fuller book at exactly the point your own team most wants time off, and September refills the schedule with the families and students who deferred. Offices that book their summer cover in the spring do considerably better than ones reacting in July.

Do Kelowna and Kamloops share a pool?

No, and it is worth being clear about. They are nearly two hours apart on the highway, which is well past the point anyone drives for a single day of work. Treat whichever is nearer to you as your market. Vernon sits between them and leans toward Kelowna; Penticton is south of Kelowna and largely its own.

Can you bring professionals up from Vancouver?

Realistically no. Kelowna is around four hours from the coast and Kamloops around three and a half, so nobody is making that trip for a day. Interior practices are staffed by interior professionals, which makes a local hire worth more here than in the Lower Mainland.

Which interior communities do you staff?

Kelowna, West Kelowna, Kamloops, Vernon and Penticton are the main centres and where coverage is deepest. We also cover Lake Country, Peachland, Summerland, Salmon Arm and Merritt, where the pool is thinner and notice matters more. Temp shifts, permanent placement and dentist locum cover are available throughout.

Who employs the professional on an interior placement?

On temp and locum bookings we do. We confirm registration in good standing with the BC College of Oral Health Professionals, carry the insurance and run payroll, and you receive one invoice at an all-in hourly rate. On a permanent hire your practice is the employer and runs its own registration checks and references.

I live in the Okanagan. Is there enough work?

In Kelowna and Kamloops, comfortably. In the smaller centres it is quieter, but competition for it is far lower than on the coast and offices notice professionals who live nearby. Summer is when practices most need people, so being available in July and August puts you in a strong position.
