Can a temp dental hygienist come over from Vancouver for one day?
They can, and very few will, and it is worth understanding why rather than assuming it is about willingness. The sailing is short but you travel on the timetable rather than your own schedule, so an eight hour shift becomes most of a waking day once the drive, the check-in, both crossings and the wait for a return sailing are counted. For a single Tuesday that arithmetic rarely works. For a booked block it changes completely.
Is the Sunshine Coast one market?
No, and treating it as one is the usual mistake. Gibsons and Sechelt share a peninsula and a pool. Powell River sits beyond a second ferry, which makes it a separate market that is often easier to reach from Comox than from Vancouver. If your practice is on the upper coast, the lower coast is not your catchment in any practical sense.
So how do coast practices actually staff?
Mostly from people who already live here, topped up with booked blocks that justify the crossing. That is why a local hire is worth more on the coast than almost anywhere, and why posting a run of days will reach professionals a single day never will. It is also why notice matters: somebody planning a block needs to arrange accommodation as well as travel.
Does summer change things?
It adds patients without adding professionals. The coast fills up in the warm months, practices get busier, and the same stretch is when local staff most want time off. Booking known absence early matters here for the same reason it does in any seasonal market, with the added complication that a replacement may need somewhere to stay.
Who employs the temp professional on the coast?
