In the Lower Mainland a rota of temps is a perfectly good way to run a practice. Up here it is the thing that fails first, because there is no deeper market to absorb a gap when somebody cannot make it. If your need is ongoing rather than occasional we would rather point you at permanent placement than sell you cover that keeps falling over.

A single Tuesday in Williams Lake is a hard ask. A booked week, arranged two months out, is a very different proposition and far more likely to be taken. Think in blocks rather than days.

How is staffing up here different from the rest of the province?
The distances invert the usual problem. A practice in Prince George or Williams Lake serves a catchment hundreds of kilometres across, because patients will drive three hours for an appointment. But nobody drives three hours for a single shift, so the pool you recruit from is the town you are in. Serving a huge area and hiring from a small one at the same time is the defining feature of this region.
Can you send professionals up from Kamloops or Vancouver?
Not for a day, no. Prince George is around 525 kilometres from Kamloops and nearly 800 from Vancouver. For a booked block of a week or more with plenty of notice it can occasionally work, and we will tell you honestly when it is worth exploring. For ordinary cover, plan on local professionals.
So what actually works?
Permanent hiring, more than anywhere else in the province. Where the local pool is small and there is no larger market to top up from, a rota of temps is the thing that breaks first. Temp and locum cover is the right tool for a callout, a leave or a specific block. For an ongoing gap, hire someone who lives there.

Who employs the professional on a northern placement?
On temp and locum bookings we do. We confirm registration in good standing with the BC College of Oral Health Professionals, carry the insurance and run payroll, and you receive one invoice at an all-in hourly rate. On a permanent hire your practice is the employer and runs its own registration checks and references.
I live in northern BC. How strong is my position?
Very. Practices here cannot import coverage, so the professionals who live locally are the entire market. If you want recurring days, a permanent role, or simply to be asked first, this is where you can have all three. Willingness to travel between Prince George and Quesnel or Williams Lake makes you more valuable again.
